Geothermal Supply Company offers propylene glycol to be used as antifreeze in geothermal loop systems.  The type of propylene glycol provided is the same as that used as a moisturizer in medicines, cosmetics, food, toothpaste, mouth wash and tobacco products.

When most fluids freeze, they expand in volume which can often cause pipes to rupture.  A water-glycol mixture, at temperatures below freezing retains its flow-ability.   In addition, the elasticity/ductility of HDPE used in geothermal loop systems allows the pipe to withstand the expansion of a frozen fluid without causing damage to the HDPE pipe.
